The Death Guard Space Marine Legion The Death Guard are one of the infamous First Founding Legions of the Adeptus Astartes, originally a noble force of unyielding defenders that fell to Chaos during the Horus Heresy. Now corrupted by the Plague God Nurgle, they stand as rotting, pestilent warriors—spreaders of decay, disease, and despair across the galaxy, embodying the grotesque "blessings" of their dark patron. Fall to Chaos & the Horus Heresy Mortarion’s bitterness toward the Emperor (fueled by perceived slights and a desire for independence) made him vulnerable to the whispers of Chaos. During the Horus Heresy, he allied with Warmaster Horus, drawn to the promise of freedom from the Emperor’s "tyranny"—and ultimately to the embrace of Nurgle, the Chaos God of decay, disease, and rebirth. Post-Heresy: Plague Marines of Nurgle After the Heresy, the Death Guard retreated to the Eye of Terror—a warp-tainted region of space—where they fully embraced Nurgle’s gifts. They transformed into Plague Marines: rotting, pus-covered warriors whose bodies are walking bio-weapons. Their armor is encrusted with filth, rust, and growths, and their weapons drip with toxic sludge that dissolves flesh and metal alike.
